RESTORING HISTORY. HONORING LIVES.

North Township acquired Oak Hill Cemetery when conditions at the century-old resting place for thousands of local individuals had gone from bad to worse.

Known mostly for its Civil War veterans and as a final resting place of region notables who helped establish and grow Hammond into a model city in the early and mid-1900s, Oak Hill continues to be a a working cemetery under the watchful eye of the North Township Trustee's office.

Since taking ownership of Oak Hill, the grounds have been restored, grave markers have been replaced, a database of all of those buried there has been created and the main gate replaced (pictured above). Work continues on the grounds of the once-neglected cemetery.

Did you know?

There are 2,500 burial plots remaining at Oak Hill Cemetery. Most of the remaining burial spaces are located inside and near the two mausoleums.
